What is Coast FIRE?

Coast FIRE is the milestone where your existing investments are large enough to grow into your full retirement corpus on their own. You still work and still pay your bills, but you no longer have to put money aside for retirement — compounding covers the rest of the journey. It is the most reachable milestone on the financial independence path because time, not extra saving, does the heavy lifting.

How does Coast FIRE work?

  1. 1. Decide your retirement lifestyle. Start from what a year of retirement costs in today's money.
  2. 2. Estimate your retirement corpus. Grow those expenses by inflation to your retirement age, then size a portfolio that can fund them for your full retirement.
  3. 3. Work out the compounding runway. Count the years between today and your target retirement age at your expected return.
  4. 4. Discount the corpus back to today. That present value is your Coast FIRE number.
  5. 5. Reach it and coast. Once you hold that amount, you can potentially stop making retirement contributions and let compound growth do the work.
