How a step-up SIP works

An ordinary SIP invests the same amount every month for the whole period. A step-up SIP raises that amount once every 12 months, usually to match a salary increase, so the installment grows while the habit stays the same.

  1. 1. Monthly compounding. The expected annual return is divided by twelve and applied each month to the running balance.
  2. 2. One increase per year. The monthly amount is raised at the start of every new year — by a percentage of the current installment, or by a fixed amount.
  3. 3. Two effects stack. You invest more in total, and the earlier installments have longer to compound, which is why the gap against a flat SIP widens over time.
  4. 4. Estimates only. A constant return is a modelling convenience. Actual market returns are uneven and can be negative in any given year.
