How this PPF calculator works
PPF interest compounds once a year, so the order of your deposits matters as much as the amount.
- 1. Deposit timing. In yearly mode the whole amount goes in at the start of the year and earns interest for all twelve months. In monthly mode each deposit only earns interest for the months after it is paid in.
- 2. Annual crediting. Interest is worked out for the year and added to the balance at the year end, so next year's interest is earned on deposits plus past interest.
- 3. Your rate, every year. The rate you type is applied to every year of the projection. The real rate is notified quarterly, so run a lower rate as a sanity check.
- 4. Extensions. Beyond the 15-year maturity you can extend in five-year blocks — set 20, 25 or 30 years to see what continuing costs you nothing extra but time.
