How the FIRE number is calculated

  1. 1. Inflate your spending. Your monthly retirement spending is grown at your inflation rate for the years between your current age and your target retirement age.
  2. 2. Subtract other income. Pension, rental or any other retirement income reduces what the portfolio has to cover.
  3. 3. Divide by the withdrawal rate. The remaining annual spending divided by your safe withdrawal rate gives the target corpus — at 4%, that is 25× annual spending.
  4. 4. Project what you will have. Your current invested assets and monthly contributions are compounded at your expected return to your target age, which gives the projected corpus, the gap, and the monthly amount needed to close it.
