What is net worth?

Net worth is assets minus liabilities — the money that would be left if you sold everything you own and cleared everything you owe. Income tells you what flows in each month; net worth tells you what you have actually kept. That makes it the best single metric for long-term progress, because it moves only when you save, invest, or reduce debt.

How to calculate your net worth

  1. 1. List your assets. Bank and cash balances, investments, retirement accounts, property, vehicles and anything else of real resale value.
  2. 2. Use honest values. Market value for property, resale value for vehicles — not what you paid.
  3. 3. List your liabilities. Outstanding balances on mortgages and loans, plus unpaid credit card and other debt.
  4. 4. Subtract. Assets minus liabilities is your net worth, positive or negative.
  5. 5. Repeat monthly. One reading is a snapshot; a series is a trend you can act on.
